Two Perfect Records, One Close Call

Ashley P. and Heather are still 4-0, one in each division. Ashley P. led every day. Heather trailed until Sunday. Catt got her first win, and three of the five Saturday leaders went home with losses.

The Matchups

John Tavares' Magic Amulet (Heather S., 280.6) def. Keller? I hardly know her (Anna Y., 272.7)

Last week this section said Anna had the best possible chance to ruin someone's perfect season. For six days, she was doing it.

Anna led after Monday. On Tuesday she scored 99.0, the second-best day in the league, and led by 33.2. Mikko Rantanen had a hat trick for 19.0, and Andrei Vasilevskiy added 20.4. She still led by 31.2 after Friday and by 11.5 after Saturday.

Then Sunday: Heather 44.6, Anna 25.2. Spencer Knight scored 14.1 of it. Anna lost by 7.9. It was the only lead change all week, and it came last.

Jesper Wallstedt scored 40.4. Auston Matthews added 24.0 and Logan Stankoven scored four goals for 23.0.

Rantanen finished with 26.5. Scott Wedgewood made 66 saves for 30.3 without a win, and Vasilevskiy scored 27.9. Collin Graf scored 9.0 on Anna's bench, more than the margin by himself.

Verdict: Perfect records don't come with style points.

like breadard and butter (Caitlynn C., 291.2) def. Dude, Where's Makar? (Kaitlyn M., 273.2)

Four lead changes, tied for the most of the week. Caitlynn led Monday by 0.7. Kaitlyn took Tuesday. Caitlynn took Thursday. Kaitlyn took Saturday, by 4.0.

Sunday went 35.5 to 13.5. Brayden Schenn scored 7.0, and Brady Tkachuk and Artturi Lehkonen 6.0 each. Final margin, 18.0.

Leon Draisaitl was the top skater in the league: six goals and six power-play points, 36.5. Sergei Bobrovsky won both starts for 34.0. Lucas Raymond added 22.5, Lehkonen 22.0, and Brady Tkachuk scored 18.5 with 16 hits.

Kaitlyn's goalies did their part. Darcy Kuemper won both starts for 44.3 and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen scored 26.9. Kirill Kaprizov scored 23.0. Joey Daccord scored 14.3 on Saturday from the bench. The weekly Makar report: 11.5.

Verdict: Four lead changes. Caitlynn just made sure she had the last one.

Flickin' the Bean (Catt M., 301.7) def. May the Fors(berg) be with you (Liv S., 278.4)

Catt's first win of the season, and the second-highest score of the week.

She led by 33.1 after Tuesday. By Thursday it was 2.6, and after Saturday Liv led by 2.8. Then Ryan O'Reilly scored 15.0 on Sunday, Jake Oettinger added 12.6 and Roman Josi 10.5. Catt won Sunday 54.1 to 28.0.

Her goalies scored 113.2 in starts, the most in the league. Arturs Silovs shut out his opponent on Thursday for 25.0, the best single game of the week, and finished with 51.9. Oettinger went 3-0 for 38.9. Anthony Stolarz scored 22.4 in his start and 19.4 on the bench. Philipp Grubauer, picked up Tuesday, scored 20.6 on Thursday, also on the bench. She also left 40.0 on the bench, all goalie. Catt has more good goalies than places to put them, a problem most of the league would pay for.

Liv's goalies were nearly as good. Yaroslav Askarov scored 38.8, including 24.9 on Thursday, and Karel Vejmelka added 27.1. Tim Stutzle scored 20.5, and Steven Stamkos had 12.0 of his 17.5 on Sunday.

Verdict: Winless was a phase.

Honorable Mentions

Colorado Scuba Club (Ashley P., 304.1) def. Sorokin Deez Nutz (Nina R., 285.1). The historian's team, so this stays brief. Two unbeaten teams met, and Ashley P. led after every day, by as much as 69.8 after Friday. The week's high score. Joel Hofer was the top scorer in the league with 54.4, and Dylan Garand, who spent last week scoring on the bench, scored 39.4 in his starts. Kirill Marchenko added 24.5. Nina scored 2.0 on Friday and 106.9 on Saturday, which averages out to a loss. Connor McDavid had eight assists for 33.0, Drake Batherson had a Saturday hat trick, and Kiefer Sherwood had 22 hits.

Pop That Bussi (Ashley L., 284.1) def. Freezing My Kucherov (Alexius S., 246.4). Alexius led by 0.1 after Tuesday, a lead one blocked shot could erase, and by 3.0 after Thursday. Then Friday went 35.6 to 9.5, and Ashley L. led the rest of the way. Stuart Skinner made 80 saves for 39.9 without a win, and Mackenzie Blackwood scored 29.2. Joel Eriksson Ek and Macklin Celebrini scored 21.5 each, Jason Robertson 20.0, and Adam Fox had seven assists. Devon Levi won both starts for 32.1, Jeremy Swayman scored 27.4 and Joseph Woll 25.4.

Team of the Week

Flickin' the Bean (Catt M.). 0-3 coming in, 301.7 going out. The best goalie week in the league, the best single game, and a Sunday comeback. She left 40.0 on the bench and still won by 23.3. The goalie hoard is now officially a strategy.

Coldest Team of the Week

Freezing My Kucherov (Alexius S.). 246.4 was the low score of the week, and 37.7 was the biggest margin.

The goalies held up their end, 84.9 from three of them. The skaters didn't get the memo: Easton Cowan led them with 16.5, and the bench had 0.0 to offer. She led after Thursday. Then Ashley L. had the best Friday in the league, and that was that.

Transactions & Trades

The Waiver Wire

No trades. Eleven moves, one waiver battle.

Caitlynn C. (like breadard and butter) swapped Bryan Rust for Jack Quinn on Wednesday, after Rust had scored 6.0 for her on Monday. Quinn scored 9.5. On Friday afternoon she dropped Zach Hyman.

Two teams put in claims. Nina R. (Sorokin Deez Nutz) got him early Sunday for Lawson Crouse. Catt M. (Flickin' the Bean) lost the claim. Last week Caitlynn's Sam Reinhart drop went to Ashley P. Her drops are now a recognized market. Nina also picked up Mikael Granlund on Monday and dropped Blake Coleman on Friday.

Catt M. had the most going on. Philipp Grubauer without a drop on Tuesday, Carter Verhaeghe for Tyler Bertuzzi on Wednesday, Josh Anderson for Jake DeBrusk on Friday, plus the Hyman claim.

Ashley L. (Pop That Bussi) added Fraser Minten for Ben Kindel and Adam Edstrom for Jared McCann. Minten scored 10.5.

Heather S. (John Tavares' Magic Amulet) dropped Alex Ovechkin on Sunday morning. No statement was issued.

Ashley P., Liv, Alexius and Anna sat still. Kaitlyn M. (Dude, Where's Makar?) is at zero moves through four weeks. The Monk award committee has stopped meeting.

Translation: Drop someone on a Friday, expect company by Sunday.

League Landscape Week Four

Two teams are unbeaten, one per division. One is winless. Everyone else is 1-3, 2-2 or 3-1.

East: Ashley P. (Colorado Scuba Club) is 4-0 with the most points in the league, 1,177.9. Nina R. (Sorokin Deez Nutz) is 3-1, 25.1 behind. Caitlynn C. (like breadard and butter) is 2-2. Liv S. (May the Fors(berg) be with you) is 1-3 with the fourth-most points in the league. Catt M. (Flickin' the Bean) is 1-3, and the zero is gone.

West: Heather S. (John Tavares' Magic Amulet) is 4-0. Ashley L. (Pop That Bussi) is 3-1. Kaitlyn M. (Dude, Where's Makar?) and Alexius S. (Freezing My Kucherov) are 1-3. Anna Y. (Keller? I hardly know her) is 0-4, and led after 6 of the 7 days this week. The standings don't give credit for that. This section does.

Matchup 5 is Heather against Ashley L., first against second in the West. Ashley P. gets Catt, who just won. Caitlynn gets Nina, and the Hyman paperwork.

Moral of the Week

Undefeated is a streak, not a guarantee. Ask anyone who was 3-0 last week.
